Benefit Concert with Yannis Spanos for Greece
The Hellenic Relief Foundation is organizing a benefit concert with renowned Greek composer and piano soloist Yannis Spanos. The concert will take place at Queensborough Community College Theater (222-05 56th Ave, Bayside, NY) on Saturday April 13th, at 8 p.m.
Spanos will perform many of his well known songs accompanied by vocalist Hrysoula Stefanaki. All net proceeds of the concert will benefit the mission of the Hellenic Relief Foundation in Greece.
Yiannis Spanos is one of the leading Greek composers. He was born in Kiato where he began studying piano. While a university student, he abandoned his law studies and moved to Paris where he played piano in various venues and worked with many stars of the French music scene, such as Brigitte Bardot, Pia Colombo etc. Early in the 60’s he returned to Greece and became one of the pioneers of the “New Wave” movement in music.
Spanos composed music for some of the most important lyricists in Greece, among them Lefteris Papadopoulos, Giorgos Papastefanou, Manos Eleftheriou, Pythagoras etc. Most of Greece’s great vocalists have sung his wide ranged repertoire.
Hrysoula Stefanaki is a prolific presence on the Greek music scene. She has collaborated with major Greek composers and singers besides Yannis Spanos.
The Hellenic Relief Foundation Inc. was incorporated in the State of New York, on January 19, 2012 as a not-for-profit philanthropic entity. The Foundation is the initiative of Americans of Hellenic descent who sought to address humanitarian needs stemming from the current crisis in Greece. Thus far, the organization has distributed approximately 150,000 lbs of food and other essential items to needy families, municipalities and institutions. The foods provided to recipients are purchased from local Greek producers.
