Sculptor and painter Annita Faitaki was born on the island of Crete and grew up among a family of goldsmiths. It is easy to see the influence of ancient art in her work; Faitaki brings the classical world into the modern era, giving her pieces a sense of timelessness while confronting modern issues. Much of Faitaki’s work addresses social concerns such as the place of women in society, communication between people and groups, the importance of respecting human rights, and the necessary freedom of people to express themselves. Faitaki says she views sculpture as a reflection of the energy of the earth and therefore a powerful means of expression, building community and connecting the heart with the mind.

The process by which Faitaki creates her sculptures is highly technical, time consuming, and expensive. She first creates each piece in clay or wax then has them cast in bronze at a foundry. Later, she may add on a patina in order to create color. She describes the process as one of manifestation: the search for an unknown world waiting to be discovered. Her paintings, too, depict a sculptural quality in their texture, energy, and depth.
