Fytousi Society has been doing this since 1994, when under the leadership of its founders, the syllogo was officially incorporated in Warren, Ohio. Soon it began to attract and connect members in the United States, Canada and abroad.
In 2003, fresh innovations were brought to the society under the leadership of a new board. Also at this time, the syllogo joined the Chian Federation and became incorporated in New York as the “Chian Society of Fyta of North America, Agia Paraskevi.” Over the course of six years and through tireless efforts, this board graciously led the organization, maintained its efforts and extended its charitable contributions.
Inspired by the example of the founding and successive boards, with the continued support of our members, and in the spirit of syllogo’s mission, a new board was established in the spring of 2009. With great appreciation for all the selfless efforts that have made this society flourish, and in hopes of carrying on the traditions of the Chian Society of Fyta, the most recent board was inspired to create our first-ever event and association journal.
Since its establishment, and with the diligent efforts of its devoted members, the Chian Society of Fyta has had 13 annual dinner dances, contributed to various charitable organizations, established a scholarship fund and undertaken many projects in Fyta. Some of the organizations we have supported include the Ronald McDonald House, St. Basil’s Academy, Kyriaki’s Retinoblastoma Foundation, and this year we add to the list the De Rosa Foundation.
The scholarships are awarded annually at the Chian Society of Fyta’s dance and are chosen in a random lotto. All members and their children currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies are eligible to apply for the awards.
Most recently, the Chian Society of Fyta has witnessed a renewed excitement inspired, in part, by the involvement of its neolaia. Every year the number of youth at our dance increases as we welcome new faces to celebrate with us; a new generation has begun volunteering its support and there are eager talks of hosting youth events.
It is hard to imagine what the future holds for the Society, but after 15 wonderful years, we are still quite passionately committed to preserving our traditions for the next generation. We are eternally grateful to all the founding Fytousi, our previous and current boards, each of our enthusiastic members and everyone who has ever committed time and/or resources to the support of our causes.
